Mar 20 nossue: Saving The World One Compostable Mailer At A Time

Even though some weeks I go without throwing anything in the rubbish bin, there are a few products in my life that I have been struggling to find eco-alternatives for. So not to overwhelm myself, I keep a list of the things I still need to work on, and change them step by step. Ink cartridges, light bulbs, fly spray… one of them used to be courier bags, but now I’ve crossed it off the list, because these Compostable Mailers exist!

noissue are your go-to for customisable eco-friendly tissue paper, but this year they’ve trialled compostable mailers that break down in just 6 months in your home compost. Compared to a normal plastic mailer that will take, well, it won’t ever break down, I think this is a brilliant solution.

One of the main things that impressed me about these mailers, was the HOME compostable element. Did you notice how I emphasised the word ‘home’? Home compostable and commercially compostable mean completely different things: what can break down in a commercial composting plant (a well regulated and thriving system), may not break down in your home compost (less regulated and does not reach the high temperatures that some objects need to break down).

Far too often, I’m presented with products that say ‘compostable’ but really only mean commercially compostable. Individuals are not educated on this (now YOU are!), and commercial compost bins are far and few between. People are throwing ‘compostable’ coffee cups in their home compost bins and wondering why they aren’t breaking down. To me, this is greenwashing.

The second thing that caught my eye when I first heard of noissue’s new compostable mailers, was their education around reusing the mailers too. It’s great for something to be compostable, but replacing a plastic object with a compostable one, isn’t enough these days.

REUSE is the word of 2019, in my humble opinion, and noissue have hit the nail on the head.

Creating a compostable mailer still requires resources to produce. Things like corn, energy, and transportation of goods, all take away from the planet. The amount of resources needed can be avoided with the concept of reusing. Reusing the compostable mailer even two times, immediately reduces its impact even further.

Compostable AND reusable. This is gold.

P.S. Courier labels do not yet have a compostable alternative. It is important you cut the courier label off, because you pop these in your home compost bin.
